Colombia general-purpose VFD distribution is not a one-voltage, one-climate business. A drive stocked for a warm industrial site near the Caribbean coast may need a different enclosure and cooling plan from one installed in Bogota. Pump and fan packages can share some motor-control requirements, but their overload, minimum-speed and process-feedback needs are not identical. A distributor therefore needs a stocking method, not a pile of unrelated power ratings.
This application guide is for Colombian distributors building a repeatable BEDFORD W505 range for industrial fans, water-transfer pumps, circulation pumps and general machinery. It focuses on the questions that affect quotation accuracy, sample approval and bulk-order planning.

Why Colombia General-Purpose VFD Stocking Is Not Uniform
Colombia’s national statistics agency, DANE, reported 6,583 industrial establishments in its 2024 Annual Manufacturing Survey. Those establishments generated COP 443.9 trillion in gross production and COP 148.3 trillion in value added. The figures describe a substantial manufacturing base, not a direct VFD market size. They do, however, show why distributors receive motor-control inquiries from many industries and regions. See the DANE 2024 Annual Manufacturing Survey.
DANE also notes that manufacturing activity is concentrated around Bogota, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Cundinamarca, Atlantico and Santander. That distribution matters for inventory. A distributor serving Medellin and Bogota may see a different mix of pump, fan and production-equipment inquiries from a seller focused on coastal logistics and food-processing sites.
The correct commercial question is: which repeatable motor applications can the distributor support with selection data, commissioning documents and spare stock?
Colombia Uses 60Hz, but the Motor Plate Still Decides
Colombia’s electrical regulations identify 60 Hz as the standard system frequency. The same regulation lists common low-voltage supply arrangements, including 120/208 V configurations, while industrial projects may use other specified voltages and transformers. See Colombia’s 2024 electrical regulation compilation.
This does not mean every stocked drive should be ordered from a country chart. For each inquiry, confirm:
- Site supply voltage and phase
- Motor rated voltage, current and frequency
- Motor connection
- Required output frequency range
- Load type and duty cycle
- Local panel and protection arrangement
Imported machines can carry 50 Hz motors, dual-rated motors or non-standard voltages. A VFD can provide controlled output frequency, but the complete motor data and driven equipment limits still apply.
For distributors, the practical solution is to put a motor-nameplate photograph at the top of the quotation form. It prevents many wrong selections before price is discussed.
Bogota Makes Altitude a Stocking Issue
Bogota sits at approximately 2,600 metres above sea level according to the Bogota city government. At higher altitude, thinner air reduces natural cooling. The BEDFORD W505 manual calls for derating above 1,000 m, so a distributor cannot assume that a drive carrying a motor’s nameplate current at sea level will deliver the same thermal margin in Bogota.
Altitude should trigger four actions:
- Obtain the exact installation altitude.
- Apply the W505 manual’s derating method.
- Check cabinet ventilation and ambient temperature together.
- Move to a higher drive rating when the corrected continuous current requires it.
Do not apply one informal percentage from memory. Use the product manual and the actual site conditions. A large sealed cabinet in a warm electrical room can have less cooling margin than the outdoor temperature suggests.
Altitude also affects motors and pumps. Confirm the motor manufacturer’s altitude rating and review whether the pump duty changes with local process conditions. The VFD selection is one part of the full system.
One Country Also Contains Very Different Moisture Conditions
Colombia’s Pacific region records the country’s highest rainfall, with parts of Choco and Cauca exceeding 10,000 mm annually and more than 200 rainy days in some areas, according to IDEAM. In contrast, IDEAM identifies Alta Guajira as the driest area, with annual totals around 500 mm or less in places. See the IDEAM dry-region explanation.
Those facts do not specify a VFD enclosure. They explain why “for Colombia” is not enough environmental information. Ask about:
- Indoor or outdoor installation
- Rain exposure and water spray
- Dust and airborne contamination
- Salt-laden coastal air
- Cabinet cooling method
- Condensation and humidity
- Maximum ambient temperature
- Maintenance access
W505 should be installed inside a suitable electrical arrangement for the actual environment. Do not market the standard product as waterproof, salt-resistant or outdoor-ready without confirmed enclosure data.
Build Stock Around Inquiry Families
A useful distributor stock plan starts with application families, not with every possible kW rating.
| Inquiry family | Typical information needed | Commercial stock direction |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial fan | Motor current, starting torque, minimum ventilation speed, command signal | Common voltage and current classes with simple control accessories |
| Water-transfer pump | Pump curve, head, flow, motor current, dry-run method | Drive plus pressure/level control accessories where required |
| Circulation pump | Required flow range, system pressure, process feedback | PID-capable package with sensor confirmation |
| General machinery | Torque behavior, acceleration, braking, duty cycle | Do not quote from motor kW alone |
| Replacement drive | Old drive label, motor plate, parameters, failure condition | Keep selected spare ratings and a replacement checklist |
Start with sales history. Group the last 20 to 50 inquiries by voltage, continuous motor current, load type and region. The first bulk order should cover repeatable demand, while uncommon ratings can remain project orders.
This is better than buying one unit of every size. It improves turnover and gives the technical team time to learn a controlled product range.
W505 Functions Need an Application Translation
BEDFORD W505 is a general-purpose sensorless vector controller supporting SVC, V/F control, PID functions, multi-speed settings and configurable motor parameters. Distributors should translate those functions into customer decisions.
For a fan customer, discuss smooth acceleration, required speed range, motor current and minimum airflow. For a pump customer, discuss flow or pressure feedback, minimum head, dry-run method and hydraulic limits. For machinery, discuss starting torque, stopping method and duty cycle.
Avoid a feature-only sales pitch. A buyer is more likely to trust a distributor who says, “Send the motor plate and load details; we will confirm the operating range,” than one who promises that a single VFD fits every motor of the same kW.
Use a Three-Level Quotation Form
Make it easy for sales staff to collect the right information without becoming drive engineers.
Level 1: Mandatory for Every Quote
- Motor power, voltage, current, frequency and speed
- Site voltage and phase
- Application type
- Installation altitude
- Indoor/outdoor and ambient temperature
Level 2: Needed for Application Setup
- Required minimum and maximum speed
- Acceleration and deceleration needs
- Pressure, flow, level or external command signal
- Automatic restart requirement
- Fault output or PLC communication requirement
Level 3: Needed Before Bulk or OEM Approval
- Sample test plan
- Approved parameter file
- Wiring and accessory list
- Label and packaging requirements
- Spare-unit and after-sales process
- Batch inspection criteria
This structure keeps small quotations fast while preventing a bulk order from being approved with incomplete technical data.
Price the Support Package, Not Only the Drive
Colombian distributors care about competitive price and stock availability, but a low unit price can be erased by one avoidable site visit. Include the support scope in the quotation:
- Selection confirmation
- Recommended accessories
- Approved wiring diagram
- Basic parameter sheet
- Remote startup support if agreed
- Warranty process
- Spare-unit policy
BEDFORD has 30 years of brand history, more than 50 R&D personnel, over 100 patents and experience supporting customized development and large-volume production. Use these facts selectively in distributor discussions. The stronger proof is a repeatable sample test and stable batch configuration.
For private-label or pump-package cooperation, review the BEDFORD OEM and ODM service and the general-purpose VFD category.
Recommended First Sample Order
Do not publish a universal kW list without distributor sales data. Instead, build the sample order around three confirmed customers:
| Sample | Customer type | Required test |
|---|---|---|
| A | Industrial fan installer | Start, speed range, current, minimum ventilation |
| B | Pump-system contractor | Flow/head response, current, PID or external control |
| C | Machine builder | Starting torque, acceleration, stop and repeated duty |
After each test, record parameters, current, temperature, fault behavior and customer feedback. Use those results to decide the first bulk stock. This converts inventory planning from guesswork into evidence.
Colombia general-purpose VFD distribution should reflect the country’s real operating range: 60 Hz electrical standards, high-altitude cities, wet and dry regions, and a varied manufacturing base. A W505 stock plan built around motor current, environment and repeatable applications can produce better quotations, faster replacement support and fewer unsold ratings.
